Convention Stories: I Believe I Can Fly

So more often than not I drive to the conventions that I go to but in rare situations, I do book a flight because some trips are just too far away to easily do in a car and I only have so much vacation time.  Now most of these flights actually wind up going very well and I’ve used Delta, American Airlines, United, Frontier, and Allegiant, but as we all know flying is a very tedious process and one that can make it a very difficult means of transportation.  After all, I’ve already had one story about my flying experiences on here nearly ending pretty badly.  Today I’ll go over a few of the random mishaps of my flying experiences.

Megacon 2021:

So in Megacon 2021, the weather wasn’t exactly the best for flying as a hurricane was nearing the area during the time of the convention.  Now luckily nothing serious happened but it did result in some issues with our transportation back home.  My wife and I were in line to see Chris Sabat and in the middle of the line, I get a text notification that my flight home had been canceled and was not going to be rescheduled.  Now, this is the first, and to date only, experience I had with a flight cancellation mid-trip so my anxiety was rather high.  Thankfully Chris’s line moved very slowly and I was able to easily stay still long enough to somehow book a new flight home and start the process to claim the compensation offered by the airline before I moved up in line.  This was a frustrating experience because my new flight was seven hours earlier than planned which cost me a day at the convention, but I can’t complain too much as the compensation I was offered was more than the cost of the flights themselves and since I acted quickly enough to get a flight home the same day I didn’t need to add to my hotel expense.

Megacon 2018:

You know I didn’t realize it till I started writing this but both times my wife and I flew to Megacon we had issues with our flight on the way back.  On this trip, we were waiting for our flight to begin, and turns out the plane wasn’t in good enough shape to take off.  Now, this isn’t the most unusual circumstance but what made it weird was how it was handled.  The pilot narrated the entire process of fixing the plane, well trying to fix it anyways as it was the pilot seat that was not working properly.  So first the pilot goes “well the plane’s broke but don’t worry we are attempting to repair the damaged pilot seat, we’ll update you shortly.  About 20 minutes later.  “well that didn’t work, so we are now attempting to remove the seat and repair it from outside the plane.  Another 20 minutes pass, and “well that didn’t work so now we are trying an entirely new seat instead.”  About another 20 minutes pass.  “So that didn’t work, we will now exit the plane and wait as a new plane arrives for us.”  We waited about another hour and finally managed to fly home.

The Hero Con 2021:

So on our way to The Hero Con, our flights both there and back actually ran on time without a problem schedule-wise.  The problem here was that the airline overbooked the flight and needed people to volunteer to join another flight.  Now where we were only going to be at the convention for a day delaying our arrival time pretty much meant we would do the entire trip to only spend two hours at the convention before flying back the next day so my wife and I said no. We got a similar offer on the way back home and we were honestly pretty tempted to do this one but we really didn’t want to delay getting home and relaxing after a busy weekend so we again said no but if we did agree we would have made quite a bit of money in gift cards for our troubles, but while money is nice I value good experiences above all in a period where I’m in a good place financially.

So I did say mishaps earlier in this entry but I can’t help but tell a story where things when unexpectantly perfect.

Anime USA 2019:

So on our flight home from Anime USA, things were going great until the stewardess started asking a couple of people next to us if they were together.  The person out of the two that answered gave a much longer answer than what the stewardess was expecting so she abruptly ended the conversation with them and turned to my wife and me and asked us the same question.  I just gave a one worded answer, ‘yes” and she immediatly goes “come with me” and leads us to two seats at the front of the plane that were available and we got to sit very comfortably on our ride home.
