Spy X Family Code White Review: A Heartwarming and Hilarious Adventure

So we finally got a movie for Spy X Family and my local theater has decided to stop getting anime movies so I made the 100 mile drive to see this one since I really enjoyed the show. Spy X Family features a spy named Twilight who was tasked to infiltrate a school to reach a powerful individual in a mission called Operation Strix. To do so he created a false identify Loid Forger and a false family by marrying Yor Forger and adopting Anya Forger; however, the family he created is full of individuals harboring their own secrets. Yor is secretly a deadly assassin named the Thorn Princess and Anya is a telepath. The family even adopts a dog that has the ability to see into the future. In the movie Loid is given a new mission that requires him to give up Operation Strix and his false family in the process; however, Anya is given an opportunity for success at her school in the form of a cooking event and Loid takes advantage of this to try and sway favor to keep him on Operation Strix. The Forger family venture off to Frigis to learn more about the favorite dish of the judge of the cooking event to improve Anya’s odds of success and in the process the secrets of each member and the new mission all become intertwined in a hilarious grand adventure.

The story is so well done here. While at it’s core the story is about Loid trying to help Anya succeed in the cooking event so that he can continue with Operation Strix we have a lot of other sub plots moving forward throughout the movie. Yor is in a position where she suspects Loid is cheating due to him and that’s something that creates both tension and some heartfelt moments throughout the first half of the movie. Then you have Anya who does what Anya does. It’s hard to be more specific about this but Anya is such a unique individual that it’s hard to put her actions into words sometimes, but in this case her actions end up landing her right in the middle of the issue that would have required Loid to switch to a new mission causing both him and Yor to work separately to save Anya in the process. You would really think that having three characters all harboring secrets from each other while all three of them having their own individual plots in a movie that isn’t even two hours long would make the whole story feel bulky and too much, but that’s not the case here. Because of how well the three plots bounce off each other, despite them being separate for the most part, the story seamlessly shows us what’s happening with all of these characters and at no point does it feel rushed and everything is wrapped up rather nicely.

While the story is masterfully done the heart and soul of this movie lies in its characters. Loid is very stoic, to the point, but also very attentive and caring. You have Yor who is very doting, often socially oblivious but very loving and loyal to her family and then you have Anya who is pure chaos and sass put together to look like a tiny child. She provides hilarious one liners as she over reacts to everything and her need for adventure while addressing the needs of both her parents as she tries to piece together what is going on with both of them made for so many moments that just left me grinning from ear to ear at the overwhelming amount of charm of the family dynamic. Often times it’s Anya’s antics that push the story forward because she is easily the most entertaining of the Forger family which is honestly saying something as I just find all three of them so much fun to watch.

Another thing I really liked is how this movie really showcased the tools of the trades of all three of the Forgers. Oftentimes the show heavily features Anya’s mindreading powers but the spy abilities of Loid and the assassin skills of Yor come and go as the plot needs them. The movie made heavy use of both Forger parents as Loid pulls out a ton of spy tricks and gadgets while Yor kicks butt in spectacular fashion.

Overall with this movie you have three unique stories one for each member of the Forger family and these stories intersect multiple times throughout the movie to create heartwarming moments where we see our favorite secretive family bond with each other in the face of their respective challenges. I found myself in hysterics listening to Anya’s one liners and bluntness while continuing to grin endlessly at the charm featured in this film. If you’re looking for a feel good movie that will leave you feeling better at the end of it you’re hard pressed to find one better than Spy X Family: Code White.
