Louisville Popcon 2023 Review: Is The Third Time A Charm?

So this time I once again find myself in Louisville a city with a very interesting history for conventions. We had one that was ran so poorly that I was at a lost for words to describe it and another that ran smoothly but due to negotiations for future years not going well the event hasn’t happened since. So this time we have Popcon as the third event I’ve attended in this city. This is a convention I’ve been to before in Indianapolis that decided to start up a new Popcon in Louisville.

Starting with the guests I was actually surprised at how many anime voice actors this event had. There were several well known names in shows like My Hero Academia and Fairytail. The guest list also included people from Gilmore Girls, to my wife’s delight, Star Wars, The Walking Dead and really had a nice mixture of fandoms represented. In fact I think this marks the first time my wife and I got autographs on four different autograph collections we are working on. Plus a lot of the guests they had were people I don’t recall ever doing a convention anywhere that close to my location which was an amazing touch. The guests were also very easy to get to as they were spaced well away from the vendors and signed for most of the day. I went on Saturday and didn’t spend that much time in line at all.

The panels were interesting. You had your usual Q and A panels of course but there were a lot of things that surprised me. First of all this convention had magic shows which was something I haven’t seen at a convention before so I thought that was a cool unique aspect to have. You had a variety of interactive games, fan panels and parties. There was something for everyone here without a doubt and nothing felt all that difficult to get to.

The vendors and artists were pretty cool too. Now with the volume of anime actors I was expecting a little bit more anime merch so I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t see more of it. However, there were a lot of cool vendors there many of which I’ve seen at other events. I wound up not buying anything personally because nothing really seemed like anything I just had to have but my wife did get some cool hand made merch. Another thing I liked was how well everything was spaced. I really had an easy time walking around even at the busiest part of the day. At no point did I feel cramped nor was my view obstructed by the crowd. It meant I felt comfortable taking my time and looking over the vendors that caught my eye.

Overall the convention ran really well. It had guests that rarely, if ever, appeared locally. Everything about this convention was easy to access from the autograph lines to the vendors. Plus this was an event that offered a lot to do for all kinds of fans. It’s a very well rounded event. I’m not surprised though as I really had a great time going to Indy Popcon earlier. In fact, if this event is here to stay I will absolutely consider going to it in future years because it’s less than half the distance as Indy Popcon and just as good which is a huge win for me.
