I love getting recommendations from my friends, and here is a show that was suggested to me by one of the many VTubers I’ve had the privilege of featuring. The Cat And The Dragon is all about a dragon whose mother was slain prior to being hatched. A Cat Sith found the cave the egg was buried in and had her litter at the same time the egg hatched. The cat raised the dragon as one of its own. A series of events led to the dragon staying in the forest he was raised in, being called Uncle Wings, and caring for generations of his adoptive family, all while protecting them from predators and humans.
The story is an extremely captivating one. I’ll have to dive slightly more into the details to really explain it in full, but I’ll keep it to stuff very early in the season. Uncle Wings developed an extreme distrust of humans after seeing many of his family slain by them for their fur. He attacks and threatens the nearby human civilization. The civilization stopped its cat hunting, and slowly, members of Uncle Wing’s family grew to befriend the humans. This is what ultimately sets the story in motion, as it’s a continuous cycle of how the relationship between the cats and humans evolves generation after generation. It’s told from the perspective of Uncle Wings and different members of his family, where each episode focuses on a particular cat or pairing of a cat and a human. The stories are all about the various challenges they face living side by side, and we get a myriad of different tales throughout the season.
What makes this season so well executed is that the later episodes focus on later generations and cite moments earlier in the season as major turning points for how cats and humans coexist. It dives heavily into an ever-expanding cycle of world building that there’s just a lot to love about how these relationships change over time. Uncle Wings is very distrustful of humans, but respects his family’s decision to develop bonds with them. The characters are all very entertaining, and we get amazing chemistry between all of them. We get a ton of individual but interconnected stories that are both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Thankfully, more of the former than the latter, but tonally it evokes a strong emotional reaction that makes it hard to stop watching.
The characters are all extremely well developed; the cats in particular are the stars of the show. Each cat has its own philosophy and goals, making them all unique. It’s very entertaining to see how they strive towards meeting their goals because they make for captivating tales. Most of the cats we see decide to live with the humans, but each one has a very different dynamic with them. Some teach the humans, while others decide to play more of an observant role. Some of the cats even learn from the humans and take their knowledge back to the forest they call home, which adds to the norms and traditions of the cats who live there.
The character bonds, generational development, and these changes all come together for a very emotional ending. It does a great job really giving a recap of the season to show how much change has occurred throughout the season, and ends in a way that I believe will bring some of you to tears. In a good way, of course.
Overall, this is an emotionally complete series of tales that is told through a series of independent stories between cats and humans. While these stories are independent, the effects of these tales have an impact on the relationships between the two species. The later generations have lives and stories that are greatly influenced by the tales of old. This show has a bit of everything: world-building, lore, character development, and a strong emotional impact. I absolutely love this and highly recommend watching it. It feels like there won’t be a season two from how it ended. However, if one is made, I’m watching it without hesitation.
