So in another random search for anime I came across a title that grabbed my attention. Why Does Nobody Remember Me In This World is about Kai who lives in a reality where a massive war between all races broke out and humans were victories. However, suddenly the world around him changes. Everything is in ruin and humans are fighting a loosing battle. To make matters worse everyone he knew from before has no idea who he is.

So first I’ll talk about the story because it’s really interesting. The entire world just suddenly changes and leaves a massive mystery as to why it happened and who is responsible for it. This mystery is still not entirely solved by the end of the season but as the season progresses we do get bits of pieces of information that helps in understanding what’s going on. I found this mystery to be very captivating and I really enjoyed the concept as alternate reality type stories are some of my favorites. I will say though the pacing of this season feels very strange. It feels like it’s taking it’s time for the first eight episodes and then all of a sudden things happen so quickly that it’s a noticeable change. The last part of the season gives us large volumes of information in a short amount of time and while I was a fan of the revelation I wasn’t a fan of the sudden pace change to get there. It felt like maybe this season needed one more episode to make that transition a bit smoother.

While the story is really interesting I can’t say the same for the characters. Kai is very one note and this problem extends to the rest of the cast. Typically I don’t mind one note characters as long as that note is entertaining and here it’s not. The characters do a great job in their various roles but don’t really leave any kind of lasting impression. This is further a sad fact when you realize the characters feel a need to say their names in great detail over and over again. For example for the heroes of the other races the characters constantly feel the need to say so and so is the hero of the (insert race and then name here). This amount of information is great for an introduction to a character but we don’t need it multiple times. Outside of Kai the only character in the cast we get any kind of story with is Rinne as she is a mixture of the races and we don’t know where she actually comes from or who she really is. It’s an equally interesting mystery to the story but she also suffers from a one note personality of just this obsession with Kai.

I really enjoyed the combat in this season both from just a presentation standpoint and with the story fueling the fights themselves. While the characters are one note they are very passionate about that trait and that does translate very well to the fight scenes as their opposing resolves clash. Fights are exciting, vary in pacing and we get a nice mixture of fighting styles from gun wielding, sword dueling and hand to hand combat.

So overall my opinion on this season is more good than bad. It’s got an incredible idea behind it with a solid story. What keeps it from being a great show are the characters within it. While the story has tons of depth the characters themselves do not and it’s a very noticeable difference. So I am invested enough in the mystery to see where the season goes from here but I’m not going to prioritize it over other shows I’m interested in. I really hope the characters get a chance to show us more of who they are to make them more memorable.
