Villainess Level 99: I May Be The Hidden Boss But I’m Not The Demon Lord Review: It Has A Unique Charm

So I actually came across this show in a more unorthodox method as I got a treadmill to help get in shape and a stand for my tablet so I can watch anime while I walk and I needed a show to try that out on. That’s where this show comes in which stars Yumiella Dolkness a college student who mysteriously died and was reincarnated as the secret boss in a video game Light Magic and the Hero. With her now playing as the secret boss her actions change the course of the story of the game and she finds herself inserted into the story intertwined with the main characters who she actively tries to avoid so they don’t end up fighting her when they get to the part of the game where she’s supposed to act as the boss.

The story is a rather interesting one here as other than Yumiella the cast is locked into their respective roles from the video game. Because she’s so familiar with the game’s mechanics she’s able to take the secret boss and level her up to level 99 before entering the school story portion of the game which ends up causing a stir as she is significantly stronger than the rest of her class. She just wants to avoid them entirely especially the main cast since it will be there job to fight her come that part of the story which occurs right after they defeat the big bad of the game the demon lord. However, due to Yumiella’s power and her overwhelming lack of social awareness she ends up becoming one of the main characters instead. This is where the story is at it’s most entertaining as Yumiella’s obliviousness socially is constantly entertaining as she often misreads the very clear feelings of the people around her and in such a ridiculous fashion that it winds up being comical. One such example is when she is helping her class level up her she misreads the classes desire to take things slow and steady and ends up summoning hoards of monsters over and over again in order to level grind because any gamer knows the best way to get levels is to grind for them.

What I did not expect was the romance part of the story. The game Yumiella is in does function as a dating sim type game as the protagonist of the game Alicia Ehnleit has three characters to choose from as conquerable, or romance option, characters. Now naturally Yumiella wanted nothing to do with this and openly states that was the part of the game she didn’t enjoy; however, a new character shows up and we get to see a budding romance between him and Yumiella, but again I go back to the lack of social awareness as she does not pick up any of the hints he drops despite her own budding feelings for him growing in the process. While it’s a very predictable format for a romance story it was done rather well and so I found myself very invested in the two of them. Yumiella is also quite a mood as she is clearly an introvert so she is often annoyed at having to deal with people at all unless she finds there can be something she can get out of the interaction worth her while. One such example is her active avoidance of social gatherings in the school except when they offer things like items that can boost her magic or opportunities for her to spy on the main characters to see which of the multiple versions of the game’s story is being triggered.

The majority of the show is spent with Yumiella facing a lot of prejudice as she wields dark magic and has black hair same as the demon king so she is often treated as some evil fiend which is not helped by her blunders in how she socializes with people. While this is typically a very dramatic story to be told this one is done in a more comical fashion often leading to very awkward misunderstandings between the characters. I can best describe the story as a whole as a very unusual romantic comedy in a school setting.

Overall I really enjoyed this show. Watching Yumiella navigate through school with no social awareness, a situation where she faces massive prejudice and with a goal to not actually die at the hands of the heroes when it they reach the story where they’re supposed to fight her winds up being a story that juggles a lot of elements and combines them in a very comical way. This fusion of elements is successfully done to create a story with plenty of humor, charm and in a way that makes it stand out rather well. While it’s not one of my favorite shows it definitely makes for a relaxing watch plus it seems like this is a one season anime as the story felt like it pretty much wrapped everything up by the time it ends so it’s a nice show to sit down and enjoy during a dry spell if you’re out of shows to watch and one that doesn’t require much of a time investment.

  1. Thanks for the review!

I usually don’t have much time for watching shows, but this seems like something that might be worth trying. The video game element has me curious…

    • Thanks so much for reading yeah it’s an interesting idea. It was a nice relaxing show to watch. I actually liked this one so much I found another one similar to it that a friend highly recommended and watched it too. That review is in the pipeline to come out at some point.
