I do love a good isekai anime and we have yet another one in Skeleton Knight in Another World. This show tells the story of Arc who finds himself in another world in the form of his video game character, and while he has incredible powers he also has the body of a skeleton which he hides in his massive armor. The show is all about how Arc finds himself in the mix of several adventures as he travels the new world he’s in and meets its inhabitants.
So right off the bat, I want to talk about the characters as this show features an incredibly enjoyable cast. Arc is very lively, ironic I know, and the rest of the cast include characters with very strong personalities and these characters bounce off well with each other. Arc begins to travel with a dark elf Arianne and the dynamic between her and Arc was really enjoyable if not a bit predictable. You have a very jovial and outgoing personality in Arc whereas you have the more reserved and serious Arianne. It’s a very commonly used pairing of personalities, but it’s done very well here so I didn’t mind that this was something I’ve seen time and time again. The side characters are all amusing too with unique abilities including monster tamers, ninjas, and other various professions. Arc’s passion for the video game mechanics come to life is not only one of the things that makes this character so much fun to watch but it’s also in my opinion the main highlight of the show. Not only do we see this joy in the stuff that he finds but also when he realizes how his over-the-top video game powers translate to this new world.
The story of the anime is honestly rather forgettable as the goals of the party are twofold. The first is that Arianne seeks to free enslaved dark elves and protect those in harm’s way from the people vile enough to enslave them. A noble goal but one that really feels like it gets placed in the background of everything else going on. You do see several instances of the party saving dark elves but it feels like Arc’s personality sort of just takes over those scenes and becomes the central focus of anything that’s going on. It’s still entertaining but with a dark and powerful story element like this, you would think something would be done to really help the audience feel the significance of this problem but it sort of just feels like an element of the world that is just there and is pointed out when it shows up.
The second story focuses on Arc finding a way to undo his skeleton form in this world and you would think that a goal focused on the main protagonist would play an important part in the show but that also feels like it gets placed on the back burner. In reality in spite of these two main story elements what actually happens is as the characters strive to achieve these goals they constantly wander into several situations from a behind-the-scenes antagonist and madness ensues from the conflicts between them and our heroes. Sure at times it connects a bit to their goals but the show feels like a myriad of random skirmishes till the party eventually makes progress with that. The tone of this entire season is very light-hearted making this a fun show to watch. The humor is genuinely funny and I consistently liked all of the characters throughout the entire season. However, I must give a warning to those who haven’t watched it yet. The beginning of the first episode deals with a very traumatic topic that might be legitimately upsetting even triggering to the viewers. Without going into too much detail it’s also something I think adds no real value to the story and can be skipped entirely and the rest of the show has a much more relaxed and easy-to-digest tone. I just wanted to add that to respect those who have experienced trauma and would rather avoid anything that could trigger it.
The situations the party finds themselves in throughout the show are random but connected and while I didn’t find myself all that invested in the overarching connection of all the scenarios I did find great enjoyment in watching the scenarios themselves play out. Arc constantly overestimates his opponents and uses his over-the-top abilities to quickly vanquish his foes in a very not-so-subtle manner which does present some level of tension given the subterfuge he attempts to use to hide his real form from the general public. Not much to really talk about without going into spoiler territory other than that you wind up seeing very exaggerated scenarios that proceed to cause chaos and destruction on a massive scale much to the dismay of those involved and become the height of the entertainment value for those watching.
Overall it’s hard to talk about this show in great detail because it really isn’t a complicated matter. It’s a very straightforward story that offers little more than a direction for the party to go towards and find stuff to do along the way. If you’re not a fan of shows without that kind of deeper meaningful story behind them you won’t like this one. However, the characters and how they interact with this world are amazing as you have a cast of big and lovable personalities that proceeded to make every moment exciting and captivating. My opinion of this show is a bit mixed because of this. I really enjoyed watching it but I find it to be more of a show that’s great to watch when you want to sit back and have a nice carefree evening but it sits firmly in the middle between the shows I absolutely love and the ones I dislike. I’ll watch more of it if more seasons are made because Arc and the rest of the cast are fun to watch but it has a fairly low spot on my priority list.
