My Unique Skill Makes Me Op Even At Level 1 Review: A Really Wholesome Feel Good Story

This was a show that just looked interesting from the first moment I saw the promos. From the presentation to the premise given from the name, I decided to try it out. My Unique Skill is a show starring Ryota who was a miserable salary man for a toxic company before he somehow became an item drop in another world. In this world he’s stuck at level one but in this world everything of value is obtained via item drops and all of his drops are at the highest rank. Thanks to this he is able to compensate for his low level as he and the people he helps reap the benefit of his unique skill.

So right off the bat I want to talk about the story because it’s just really wholesome. Throughout the story Ryota constantly impresses everyone as his drops are not only the highest quantity but also quality.  He even gets drops from creatures that seemingly drop nothing at all. This gets the attention of everyone around him which is the premise of how he starts his relationships with most of the other characters. It’s really interesting to see what drops various characters react to. Ryota’s main goal is just a nice happy life for him and the people around him and it’s not only reflected in his actions but his voice as well. I watched the dub and Ryota is voiced by Patrick Mealey and honestly I just love how he’s able to give a voice to Ryota that is soft and approachable but also steadfast and determined at the same time. It’s a delicate balance but impressive that not only the lines themselves reflect a compassionate main character but the manner in which he speaks as well.

So the story is pretty straightforward as it is mainly a slice of life type storyline where you just watch the Ryota family live their day to day lives and tackle the situations they find. What makes that interesting to watch is the way these characters interact with each other as not only the main characters but the side characters really play off each other well for very entertaining scenes.

It’s also fun to see how Ryota handles different situations because, without saying spoilers, some of Ryota’s drops give him incredible offensive ability in very unique ways. So as the story goes on Ryota is finding new power after new power and trying them out. While this happens numerous times in the season it never gets old as each power is a surprise and it’s really interesting to see how it applies to Ryota’s future battles. With each new challenge he faces problems that can be solved by either his drop skill or the drops he has already obtained. Each situation is different so it’s fun to see how Ryota has to stop and process each one individually and find out which of his drops works best for the situation at hand.

The characters are also very entertaining. For the entire season we see Ryota and Emily two characters with amazing chemistry with one another. Seeing Ryota learn how to take care of himself after working himself too hard from his old life thanks to Emily valuing his well being so much. This is a story that quite literally warms my heart watching. I can’t help but think about how my wife helps keep my own workaholic nature in check by making me consider my own needs.

The additional characters we meet along the way are also amazing. For example you have Eve a woman with bunny ears and known for her catch phrase “Death or Carrots.” As hinted she is quite obsessed with carrots and demands Ryota supply her with the best his drop stat can provide. I also love how the story gives some insight into these characters such as why Eve loves carrots so much and why Emily has such a kindhearted personality. It just helps me as a viewer become more invested in these individuals. Plus honestly the random carrot based phrases spoken by Eve are just hilarious.

The other two main party members Celeste and Alice do show up but much later in the season so we really don’t get that much time with them. Even then it was incredible to see how they filled a much needed role in the party dynamic as soon as they join such as Celeste’s intellect and Alice’s ability to tame monsters. I love how Celeste is a lot like Ryota was in his old life and Ryota takes what he learned from Emily to help Celeste take better care of herself and I also love how Alice was someone that nobody wanted except the worst of the worst but Ryota is so compassionate he essentially adopts her into the party so she has a happy place to belong to. These characters relationships with each other are so wholesome that I wind up just feeling good watching them. Frankly that’s where I like the show the most I just like how I feel watching it.

So overall My Unique Skill is a very straightforward show where Ryota finds himself in another world but is stuck at level one. Because the world revolves around drops and his drop stat is the best he’s still becomes the most overpowered character imaginable. I love how this is a unique spin on the isekai staple of having a super powerful main character but this show takes a very original way of making that happen. The characters are entertaining to watch with very fun personalities and when they bounce off of one another we get wholesome moments that just make you happy watching it. I really love this show and I need a season two as soon as possible.
