So after randomly looking through shows I found myself watching another Isekai called In Another World with My Smartphone. Honestly I just thought the idea of the smartphone was interesting and decided to watch it. As for the show itself it stars a boy named Touya who was accidently killed by God in his own world and to make amends God resurrected Touya in another world with any request he could make. Touya asks if it’s possible to bring his smart phone to the new world and God makes it happen, while also boosting Touya’s abilities.
The story of this show is pretty straightforward as Touya finds success in this new world he stumbles upon secrets that hint at a devious foe lurking in the shadows; however, season one really doesn’t dive heavily into this only just enough to really know there’s something going on. As for what we see in this season Touya repeatedly finds himself saving women who later on decide to join his party and eventually live and fall in love with him. In the process he goes from saving random people on the street to princesses, kings, queens and even entire countries. It actually escalates rather quickly. As he continues he learns more about the world around him and develops his skills with magic as he finds out he is unique and able to use every type of magic, so your typical over powered isekai protagonist.
We do get a substory that is introduced towards the end of the season that relies on the fact that Touya can use all types of magic and in doing so he gains access to a mysterious floating island called Babylon that comes in several parts that he has to find and become the owner of. This process takes the show into some of the more perverted humor of the show which is par for the course for the genre. It’s kind of in your face if you’re not a fan of that type of humor but it’s also brief. I’m of the mindset I don’t love or hate it but the use of it here felt a bit unneeded.
As for the smartphone angle at first I was a bit disappointed because it had very little relevance in the beginning and it just made the show seem like a pretty cut and dry isekai; however, towards the middle of the season Touya starts to figure out how to use his new powers in combination with his phone and we get to see a lot more creativity with powers that you’ve probably already seen in other shows such as status effects, navigation powers and more. Plus it’s cool to see Touya use the phone to pull ideas on how to improve the world around him using innovations from the world he was forced to leave behind. I’m actually really glad we got quite a bit of this I found all of the smartphone applications, pun intended, made for the best parts of the show.
As for the characters themselves I would describe them as good not great. They are very entertaining characters and some come with a few interesting tidbits in their back story but for the most part they are all one note and even Touya who is more complicated gets a little repetitive. It’s not bad by any means as the characters and the banter between them are very entertaining, but if you’re looking for characterization that offers something elaborate or unique that’s not something you’re going to find here. In fact once we get to the part where the leading women become infatuated with Touya it’s almost like they get relegated to a future wife of Touya insert number here, because he does have multiple fiancés. While entertaining each fiancé is actually a unique and independent character but we only see that till the relationship starts and I think the show could do a better job giving them more autonomy while in the relationship with Touya.
So overall this show checks off all of the boxes of a solid isekai anime so if you’re into that genre I think you’ll be happy with season one. I know I’m happy enough to continue with season two. It’s got a great unique aspect with the use of the smartphone; however, that’s the only unique aspect about this show. It could very easily do more with it’s characters but at least what we do get is enough to be entertaining.
