First of all hunting down the keys needed to type all of the punctuation in Bogus Skill <<Fruitmaster>> ~About That Time I Became Able To Eat Unlimited Numbers of Skill Fruits (That Kill You)~ was no easy task. It’s definitely one of the more unusual titles I’ve come across which was why I wanted to try it out. This show stars Light who wants to become an adventurer. At a certain age everyone eats one skill fruit to get their skill and can’t eat another because it will kill them. His childhood friend Lena gets the Sword Saint skill; however, he gets Fruitmaster. With a skill unable to be used for adventuring Light strives to find a way to overcome this and be by Lena’s side. He ends up unintentionally eating a second fruit and finds Fruitmaster prevents it from killing him. With a new second skill he sets off on his adventurer life.
The story has some interesting elements to it as society here is built around skills. The more powerful the skill the more success you’ll have in life. It also introduces elements such as taboo skills which serve as a nice way to prevent Light from just eating fruit endlessly to get even more powerful. Though it does feel like he ends up doing that anyways. As the story unfolds you can see who is the clear antagonist but we don’t really get to learn anything about her motivations. So the world building and the antagonist of the story that kept me interested for the entire season. However, the show has one glaring flaw and that’s the characters.
Light is honestly a very boring character to watch. He’s very one note and not the brightest character. It’s a character type that does work in some shows but here it just made him frustrating to watch. Lena is a co lead to this show and is far more interesting but even then she’s fairly one note herself. I found most of the characters I liked were the characters joining in later as they actually have more fleshed out stories. The thing is with the leads being the most important characters it is vital that there is some element that makes me want to watch their stories unfold. That’s the entire problem with this show as there really isn’t one and it made the season challenging to watch.
The fight scenes are a little lackluster as well. Nothing bad to honestly say about them I just didn’t find any of them all that exciting. Plus it’s hard to get a read on the power scaling for these skills. For example one enemy has a lightning based skill to attract and send out lighting then out of nowhere he also summons a lightning tiger. Then you have combat where someone has an investigative skill but they used it to read books to gain magic power to be able to do combat. There was so much that either felt out of place or contradicted the importance of skills and it felt distracting more than anything.
So while this show has an interesting idea I feel like the execution is lacking. The leads don’t entice me to keep watching this story unfold despite my genuine curiosity brought about by the unique and enjoyable premise. So if this show gets another season that’s great but I’m not interested in seeing it myself.
