Restaurant To Another World Season One Review: A Comfort Anime, Much Like Comfort Food

With as much as I love food based shows I was pretty happy when someone you’ve seen on this site before recommended Restaurant To Another World to me. Here the star of the show is the restaurant itself. Once every seven days doorways open all across a fantasy world. That’s when they enter this restaurant in another world and try all kinds of foods unknown to them. A seemingly simple premise but within it lies a captivating amount of depth.

Story wise each episode contains two fairly self contained stories. Each one tells the tale of how someone from the fantasy world stumbles upon a door leading to the restaurant and how they find the dish perfect for them. All of these tales are so different as well as the dishes they feature. It’s a pretty good reminder of how the value of food is easily overlooked. It’s not just a meal but sometimes comes with stories, sentiment, nourishment and more. These individual stories manage to tell a myriad of tales about how food can be valuable in so many different ways.

As these stories are told it develops the characters they feature and expands upon the ever growing world that they all come from. Even when the season continues with new stories we see many of these faces return and interact with the new characters. Some of them have paths that connect while others are just passing by as they enter the restaurant. It’s such a fascinating idea that continuously builds on itself with each episode.

The acting is really good here too as the food takes the center stage it’s nice to see such excited but realistic takes to good food. You can really hear the excitement in their voices and in their descriptions of each dish. In fact as someone who is trying to lose weight it has made my new cookbook so much more tempting as this show has made me hungry so many times.

So overall this show takes a simple idea and uses it masterfully. In this 12 episode season we see 24 different stories and watch as they all connect to a unique dish, each other and expand upon their characters and the world around them. It has so many possibilities that I’m fascinated to see what new dishes, characters or revelations we get in season two.
