In another moment of scrolling randomly I came across a show with a title that caught my attention. Honestly as a math person it was entirely because of the number. However, this seemed like an interesting show so I decided to try it out. It stars Mitsuha who struggles with financial problems in her own world but after a near death experience gained the power to travel to different worlds. Realizing she could take advantage of this she decided to use her power to raise a ton of gold for retirement.
I’m actually really interesting in the story behind the show. It’s a unique idea in the isekai genre and that’s been a hard thing for me to find lately. Essentially the world Mitsuha finds herself in is not as advanced as her own world. So things people in her world, and also us the viewers, are used to are marvels in the other world. In order to make money she buys items to then transport over to the other world to sell them at a much higher price and rake in the profits. It’s a really intriguing idea that has some entertaining moments in execution. As a foodie I especially loved how she wowed people with easy to prepare meals because it’s fun to watch people react with excitement to food.
The only problem I really have with the story is that it doesn’t feel consistent in how Mitsuha acts and in the story itself. Some moments she is using very deceptive tactics in order to get ahead and in other cases she’s throwing caution to the wind to protect people. The constant changing back and forth can be done but somehow in this case it caused a disconnect for me. When this change happens it feels a bit jarring and sudden so I struggled as a result. The story also feels disconnected as some moments make it seem more like a slice of life type of show and then you throw in a big climatic battle at the end of the season. All of the moments were really good it just didn’t feel cohesive like some shows and instead it felt like watching random events in succession.
This leads to the next topic which are the characters. My views on Mitsuha are a little all over the place. In some scenes I absolutely adore her and others I either cringe or struggle to find any interest in her. Overall I think she’s a very entertaining character I just wish I felt that way the entire time rather than most of it. The supporting cast also entertains and they do a great job in having enjoyable banter with Mitsuha and even some well done heart felt moments.
Overall I find myself really struggling to get my thoughts together on this show. Normally I have an opinion that remains fairly consistent for a majority of the show. That’s not the case here as throughout the entire season I found it alternating between moments that work very well for me and others that don’t. The way the show ended it feels like there’s more story to tell and I honestly can’t decide if this is a show I want to continue with or simply stop here.
