After having such an amazing time watching season one I was more than excited to tune in and see what was next. Our story continues as Sung Jinwoo continues to use his unique ability to get stronger to move closer and closer to his goals, such as saving his mother. However, he’s reached a point in his journey where he can no longer continue to pretend to the world he’s the same E ranked hunter he started out as. So for this season we get to explore how the world takes to the new and improved Sung Jinwoo.
So starting again with the story it hasn’t really changed all that much. Instead it greatly leveled up much like Sung Jinwoo as we watch everything we loved about season one dialed way up here. The characters Jinwoo has to face are a lot stronger so the fights and the challenges are a lot more significant with greater consequences for failure.
Throughout the season we see elements of a greater problem sprinkled in and it really does a great job in setting up something coming in future seasons while not distracting from the action. Some of those elements include lore behind why the monsters are appearing, the mystery behind Jinwoo’s father and a lot more. Then on top of that the story takes the emotional depth in an entirely new direction. Season one’s emotional turmoil was all about Jinwoo’s motivation to get stronger but now he’s reached a power far greater than his peers. So without spoiling anything the story adds new emotional moments that are so well done that it’s hard not to tear up at the sight of them. A very big departure from what we’ve seen so far but done beautifully well.
We also get introduced to a lot of new characters. As Jinwoo has reached a new stage of his journey the people he meets are at a new level as well. So this season we get introduced to a lot of S rank hunters as well as challenges and the story uses these characters to show just how impactful the threat of the monsters is becoming. Again I won’t spoil details but when you see threats that require an army of S rank hunters, after seeing the power gap these hunters have to everyone else, it really shows how terrifying these threats really are.
The thing that really makes this season amazing is how the fight scenes are elevated from season one. I already talked about how much I loved the season one fights in great detail and for that reason I was expecting more of the same. After all how do you take something that’s already amazing and elevate it further, but that’s exactly what happened here. The season had fight after fight that left me in awe at their quality. Literally as early as a couple of episodes in we’re seeing fights with moments that surpassed big climatic fights of many shows I’ve reviewed in the past. Then you get to this season’s big fight and it’s a spectacle that I would dare to call one of the best anime fights I’ve seen in years. Crunchyroll has even added these fights to their Youtube channel and I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve went to revisit these incredible moments.
I also remember talking about how frustrating season one was because the episodes were so entertaining it was sad to see the credits. Well season two managed to elevate this too with cliffhanger endings for multiple episodes that left me wanting to throw something out of pure excitement for the next episode.
Season two of Solo Leveling takes everything we love about season one and somehow finds a way to do it even better. More emotional moments, elevated fight scenes, higher risks, and even more world building. It is a season so great I revisited many of the moments on Youtube dozens of times before the season ended. It’s rare that a show is so good that I’m upset that I have to wait for more but that’s where I’m at now as I’m writing this.
