So prior to writing this I took a bit of a break from anime because as much as I love watching it sometimes you can watch too much at one time. Plus it allows newer shows to get all of their episodes released and reviews are much easier that way. In this show we have a healer named Laust who is known as an ignoramus as he only knows the basic healing spell. He was banished from his party leaving him to fend for himself only to be found by a martial artist Narsena who forms a new party with him and together they set off on their new adventure.
Starting off with the story I found this to be really interesting. There’s an immediate disconnect as everyone feels like Laust is just completely incapable of anything, but it doesn’t take the story long to show us that’s not the case. Laust is incredibly intelligent as he makes sound decisions for his party and has a wide array of abilities that aren’t normal for a healer. Sure he only knows the basic heal spell but he has combat skills and has the experience to prepare for most adventures. As the story progresses we get to see the real reason why Laust has his reputation and while I won’t go into that for spoiler reasons it’s very entertaining. This disconnect is used as a great medium to show character growth both for Laust and for the people around him. Furthermore we get to see that Laust himself has some hidden secrets that even he doesn’t seem to be fully aware of and I’ll touch more on that later.
There’s also an interesting story about the world around Laust. It’s a surprisingly lore heavy story as there’s a lot that happens prior to the events of the season. These events do a lot to shape the conflict of this season and fits perfectly with the story behind Narsena in particular. While Laust’s story seems to be more geared to how he is perceived by himself and the world around him, Narsena’s story is more about how she plays a vital role to the world itself. This gives both of our leading characters a unique but vital role to the plot.
The characters are also all very entertaining. I love how Laust is this gentle kindhearted individual and I love how there’s so many mysteries about him. Some of them we get a bit of insight to as the season progresses but we’re still far from fully understanding them all and the way we’re figuring this out is paced well to be both interesting and engaging. Narsena also comes with a bit of mystery that is paced well and we do get a better understanding of the lingering questions about her by the end of the season. So it’s this incredible series of mysteries and questions that we get some but not all of the answers to. The supporting cast also adds a lot to the story. Their are characters you’re clearly supposed to hate and they do their roles to perfection. Then you have other characters who are endearing and others who are shaped and molded by the story progression and their growth is fun to watch. We get a nice variety of characters all with unique roles that are done in a memorable and entertaining way. There really is no weak element to the cast in my opinion.
Speaking of weak elements there is one in this season but to me it’s a minor one. The combat is a bit lackluster as a lot of it primarily features a lot of dialogue with some quick attacks mixed in. Story wise these fights are entertaining but you’re not going to be impressed by the fights themselves. As someone who prefers story over action I didn’t mind this as the story is well done, but you’re definitely not watching this for the action.
So overall this is a show that has clearly crafted an excellent story. The characters are all successful and entertaining in their roles. The story is lore heavy and connects beautifully to the characters themselves. The only real drawback is how the fight scenes feel more like additional story than genuine action scenes. A drawback that never bothered me but where there are shows that can tell amazing stories mixed in with amazing fights it does mean this show falls below them in comparison. Even so the story is easy to get invested in and I’m curious as to where it goes next.
