So I finally got around to finishing this Gundam series which I thought this was season two but turns out it’s just one massive season. Part two starts off not long after part one ended. There is a bit of a divide between Miorine and Suletta after the events at the end of part one. Other than that it appeared things were quickly trying to go back to their normal school environment. The problem Guel is still missing and it isn’t long before people infiltrate and attack the very school they are in. It is there Suletta is sent on a whirlwind of actions that led her to find out more about her mother’s objectives, her Gundam, and where she stands in the eyes of the people around her.
So the story is night and day compared to the first half. Part one for the most part is cheerful and everything seems all happy till the last few seconds. Here the first few seconds are happy and cheerful and then it stays dark. Suletta’s mother Prospera really starts making her move to obtain her goal. In the process she shows she clearly doesn’t care who stands in her way or who she had to betray to get there including her own daughter. In this part of the season everyone’s goals take shape and we see everyone moving to make them happen. That’s one of the things that’s interesting about Gundam as a whole is you have several major players in the show and all of them have their own agendas. How they work with each other depends on how well those agendas align at the given moment and this is no exception. This is a show to pay a lot of attention to as there’s a lot going on.
The drama is really on point here as the tension stays high for most of the season. Characters were so tense they were ready to attack at a moment’s notice and others were making their schemes happen and taking them to the forefront where everyone was effected. Nobody was safe nor could you predict what would happen next. Everyone kept their intentions really secretive except for a couple of characters. It really was fun waiting to see who would act next and how it would change the battleground for everyone. The best way to really describe the drama is to vision the world as the prey and the cast as a bunch of predators waiting to strike.
The characters are rather hit or miss though. Miorine is an ok character as she figures out what she is really after with the development of Gundam technology and what she has to do to make those goals a reality. The problem is that she makes some big mistakes along the way which make for great character development but she appears too briefly to really sell the development of her character. The same cannot be said of Guel as he goes through recovering from his trauma he spends quite a bit of time having a reality check and because of his vulnerable state he becomes more empathetic to others. When he makes his triumphed return to space the Guel that came back is an entirely different person.
Then sadly you have the main character Suletta. I really wanted to be invested in her story and I am to a degree but she had the same flaws as season one. She has no real personality and no real ability to do or think for herself almost the entire season. Now we do find out there’s a plot reason for that as but even then it’s done to such a serious degree that one of the best episodes is the one that doesn’t feature her at all. This goes to show just how little she shapes the plot to the very end. I definitely felt for her as she suffers through betrayal after betrayal and it was heartbreaking. I was almost invested in her character just for how bad I felt for her if it wasn’t for the fact that they barely made her a character to begin with.
Then all of a sudden like flipping a switch she becomes more independent and starts acting and thinking for herself. Even then she does very little to make things happen till probably the last couple of episodes. So overall I was pretty disappointed with how the main character was not used to her full potential. I felt like something could have been done to make her character more interesting while doing more to flesh out the transition from a pawn to an independent protagonist. She honestly felt like an afterthought in her own story which frustrates me greatly.
The fights themselves, are kind of forgettable. Where Gundams have an effect that harms the pilot the battles are more often than not very short. Entertaining, but short and I felt like we needed at least one long fleshed out fight to really see some amazing combat but where things end after a few minutes I felt like this was something that was lackluster.
So overall while I did enjoy this show it’s honestly not one of my favorites. It has an amazing plot with tense drama that keeps the dark tone present. That is enough of a hook to keep me invested and enjoy what I’m watching. However, what prevented me from absolutely loving it was a main character that added little value to the plot and had very little character. At least until she developed main character energy without really enough time to make that transition feel earned and even then barely made anything happen till around the very end. Frankly she wound up being useless for most of the season and I did not like that at all because after what all she went through I was really hoping to see her actively shaping things around her. Instead she’s just there and somehow the little actions she does makes some level of difference with no real explanation.
