Catherine Full Body Review: A Dark Story Full Of Twists And Turns

So due to a sale, I decided to get Catherine Full Body. I heard a lot of good things about it and it was offered at a massive discount. To set the scene the game is about a man named Vincent who is in a long-time relationship with his girlfriend Katherine. She is more than ready to take their relationship to the next level. Due to a fear of commitment, Vincent ends up cheating on Katherine with another woman Catherine. On top of this, a mysterious girl name Rin also enters Vincent’s life and his attempts to balance his relationships with all three creates an incredible mess. Combined with the fact that after he started cheating he finds himself having nightmares of escaping horrible monsters only to find out that if he’s caught in the nightmare he dies in real life.

As you can expect the story is a huge part of the game. You the player must decide how Vincent responds to his interactions with not only the individuals that he may have a romantic involvement with but also his friends. These responses affect a morality scale which will determine how Vincent will react in various cut scenes. The results of the scale vary as the game has about 13 different endings and each one is full of very dramatic twists the likes you’ll find in reality TV shows. I was very entertained and often caught off guard by how left field some of these moments were so I looked forward to each and every cut scene. The story is rather interesting but because the game has so many endings that require total replays of the game you also have a relatively short story mode. While I love all the possible outcomes, 13 is a lot so it’s a game that’s fun to explore a few endings and then take a break before picking it back up to check out a few more.

The gameplay is something I actually have mostly positive, feelings about. As Vincent is having his nightmares you have to navigate a tower of obstacles that require you to move boxes around to make your way up to the top and escape what’s coming after you. I really love this aspect as these puzzles are very challenging and different than anything I’ve ever played before. Due to the game’s various difficulty modes you can either make it to where you have a strict time limit to solve the puzzle or none at all and I greatly enjoyed those options. It’s a nice balance for when you want to focus on the gameplay or just want to see how the story plays out for a new ending.

Now when it comes to outside the nightmares I enjoyed the gameplay but I do have a minor critique. It’s fun to walk around and interact with people to decide your moral alignment but the game really doesn’t give a lot of variety in this area. It’s always at the local bar and it’s usually the same people that you talk to. While you do have a lot of people to talk to I just wish we got a couple more locations outside of the same bar as it gives a bit of a repetitive feel. I would have loved it if there was more scenes to change things up a bit.

So overall Catherine Full Body is a fun game with lots of outcomes and lots of ways to affect those outcomes. The puzzles are challenging and very enjoyable. The story is amazing with so many twists and turns in each path. I loved this game from start to finish and it’s well worth taking the time to unlock all the endings. I just think that all of the social scenes taking place in the same location makes it a little hard to want to unlock all of the endings at once. It’s a very minor concern but where you’re exclusively at this location for each playthrough it does feel repetitive. It’s why I limited myself to a couple of endings at a time. However, each story is so captivating that it’s worth going through it to see each one of them.
