Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter Season One Review: It Finally Happened I Quit A Show Mid-Season

So as the title says I am for the first time reviewing a season of a show that I just couldn’t finish. With this I’ll explain what I liked about the show and why in spite of that I ended up unable to continue it. The story stars Noir Stardia who is a member of the lowest ranking nobles of his society. He doesn’t have any particular goal after losing a chance to work at a library so he sets off on being an adventurer. He has a unique skill great sage which allows him to find the answer to any question but it leaves him with a severe headache. To get stronger he asks the sage where he can find a dungeon to level up. Upon entering the dungeon, Noir finds an individual named Olivia chained up. Turns out she is stuck there permanently because she’ll die if the chains are removed so she decides to give Noir her unique skills which allow her to create, edit and give/take skills. However, each usage of these abilities drains life points or LP and to get them back Noir needs to well satisfy urges either by accomplishing goals, good food or as expected from anime a lot of fan service.

First I’ll talk about the story because that is surprisingly easy as there isn’t one. Noir doesn’t really have any long outstanding goals other than the very vague one of just becoming an adventurer but the story is about the individual moments and challenges he is faced with along the way. Now I actually found this to be a very interesting way to tell a story and I really enjoyed a lot of the creative uses Noir had for his new skills. For example he meets a character who can cure curses but in doing so she losses part of her life equal to the severity of the curse. Noir never gets enough LP to remove the downside to that skill entirely but is able to change the penalty from life to money. Noir is often faced with enemies far stronger than himself but with a creative mind he’s able to make skills or change the situation to be more in his favor. I really enjoyed that part of the show.

Though as creative as some of the solutions are I really have to wonder how bright Noir is sometimes. His great sage skill causes him a headache every time he uses it but why not ask how to prevent that from happening. He does come across a method to quell the headaches a bit which requires him to kiss women and he eventually gets a few seemingly willing party members who fawn over him any chance they get but still he doesn’t seem to use this skill a lot in situations that probably would have been resolved faster if he did.

The problem with this show is the fan service part. Now I want to start off by saying I actually don’t mind fan service. I’ve watched a lot of shows with it so the act of having fan service doesn’t bother me. The issue here is that some of it just flat out made me uncomfortable. I draw the line when characters ask their sister to step on them. I got to that point and I felt emotionally violated.

So there you have it. A show with an ability with seemingly limitless potential and one that I wanted to see play out but the fan service requirements to make the skill viable got to a point where I simply couldn’t watch the show. If you’re able to watch and enjoy the show no judgment at all as there are some good qualities about the show but like any viewer I have a line that once crossed I just can’t continue and that line was crossed here.
