This was the latest in a long line of shows I just decided to watch as I randomly scrolled through CrunchyRoll. This show is another isekai staring a girl named Miles. She was killed in her former life by the oh so lethal isekai truck that hits you as you cross the road and before entering her next life she asked for her abilities to be average. She doesn’t want to excel she just wants to be able to fit in and make friends; however, how her request was interpreted ended up making her more powerful than she predicted and with her ditzy personality this made for a very unusual adventure of someone who wants to fit in but has no ability to do so.
Starting with the characters Miles is very interesting. This is very much a self aware show where Miles is constantly making references to typical stuff found in isekai. Even so far as to make her request to be average as a result of seeing isekai after isekai of overpowered protagonists. I found this to be extremely entertaining and she bounces of well with the other characters in her party who are local to her new world. Miles tries very hard to hide the fact she is reincarnated but frequently references things found in our world like otakus and the collectible figurines, nendoroids. When asked about these strange words or her overpowered feats she poorly excuses them as some secret family technique. A lie that somehow doesn’t get old no matter how many times we hear it in the season.
The characters all have very entertaining personalities and bounce off of each other well. The banter between them is really good and individually they are all very likable. One moment that sticks out is when the healer is in a fight and she claims she’ll keep healing herself till she gets to her foe and smashes their staff on their head. I absolutely loved this fight scene so much for that dialogue.
The only real downside is at the beginning of the season the first antagonist really creeps me out. Miles is in the body of a 12 year old girl in this show and the first antagonist wants a non-sexualized harem of them. I’m glad they made it clear the harem wasn’t some kind of creepy 18+ thing. At the same time an adult wanting a harem of children makes me thing this anime needs Chris Hanson from To Catch a Predator. After this villain is taken down though things don’t reach that level of creepy again and the villains, while not particularly interesting, don’t make me feel uncomfortable watching them.
While the main characters are really interesting the story not so much. Where Mile’s objective is just to make friends she really doesn’t have any kind of long term goal for most of the season after episode one. The party doesn’t really have any long term goals either other than to do quests and be successful. So for most of the season the story is just whatever random quest they happen to be doing at the time. While the characters make these moments interesting the moments themselves have no lasting impact. There were moments where the story gave backgrounds to our protagonists and it was interesting how much depth these moments have but I think what made that interesting was how much fun it was to watch these characters.
When it came time to address anyone other than the main characters the moments kind of just feel flat. Every character outside of the main group really just felt like cliche plot devices you see all of the time and nothing about them makes them stand out. For example at one point you have an elderly character the party gets attached to only for him to have a near death experience to get the party invested in doing something about that current situation. The problem is because the rest of the cast isn’t nearly as captivating you don’t really get invested in moments that are centered around anyone outside of the four protagonists so moments like these simply don’t have the emotional bite to them that I want them to have.
What makes the story more frustrating is how it tries to set up it’s one and only long term goal in the last 20 or so minutes of the last episode. I actually think the end of the season sets up something interesting but I would have loved some bits and pieces of this goal to have been sprinkled in throughout the entire season rather than to suddenly have this lore and motivation provided at the literal last minute.
So overall I think the greatest irony of this show is like it’s name it’s just average. The characters are extremely entertaining and their jokes about the isekai genre are fun to listen to. I became very interested in the characters because they were fun to watch. However, due to their lack of any real goal and a world that offers no entertainment value around them it was hard to become equally invested in everything else. So you have above average protagonists in a below average world and that ends up balancing things out. With the last episode setting up a long term goal I am curious as to how season two will go but not curious enough to put this at a high or even middle spot on my list of shows to keep up with. Where this show is an isekai a genre with an insane amount of competition there are a lot of shows that did their first seasons far better.
