In another random scrolling of Crunchyroll, I came across another anime that I decided to watch on a whim. She Professed Herself Pupil Of The Wise Man is about a gamer named Kagami Sakimori who plays a older male wizard known as Danblf in their favorite MMO. He was a legendary player and one of a group of wizards known as the wise men. However, one day he wakes up trapped inside the game as his test design for a character which was a young girl. Now trapped physically in the world of the game 30 years into the future the player formerly known as Danblf became Mira the pupil of Danblf to avoid an awkward explanation. Mira now seeks out the rest of the wise men and understand what happened to her in the first place.
First I’ll talk about the story which won’t be long because there really isn’t much to talk about. The story should be complicated as there are a lot of mysterious. How did the players become trapped in the game? How do they get out? Why are all of the NPCs now alive? The problem is it seems like nobody really cares about the overarching concern. So really the story is about Mira seeking out the rest of the wise men but very little time is spent actually doing that. She mainly ends up on various side quests along the way. These side quests are a lot like the bare minimum side quests you see in most games. Escort missions, protect a specific location, retrieve a certain item and more. It’s an interesting idea but really none of it was all that exciting. It even felt like moments were dragged on when they could have been condensed. Normally I’m for a story that takes their time but this one took so much that I ended up struggling to stay focused.
The characters are also kind of all over the place. Mira has a lot of interesting moments where it’s a player that plays as an old man but through the body of a young female character. Whoever voices her clearly performed their lines with this in mind and did a fantastic job. Some of the conversations are very funny but I found the entire rest of the cast to be forgettable. It really feels like the entire purpose of everyone but Mira is simply to give Mira something to do. This has the potential to be interesting but in this case it just for me falls flat.
Mira is at best interesting and these moments are not consistent. For example there are some lines where I’m very entertained by as Mira is a very eccentric character having moments where she over reacts to things or ends up buying herself a children’s version of the robe her old character used to wear. Then you also have moments that focus too much on her trying to get used to using the bathroom or wearing female undergarments in this new body that just feels weird to watch. So with one character that I like from time to time versus an entire cast that I’m neutral about I ended up not getting attached to anyone in particular to care about what’s going on.
Mira’s powers are very interesting as she’s a summoner so her approach to any situation is to summon the right spirit for the job. These spirits are also their own characters but for the most part equally forgettable as the rest of the cast.
Combat here also falls shy of great as it’s very lackluster. Most of the combat feels like just watching Mira do her summoning chant and telling the spirits what to do. The summoning visuals are rather interesting but once they are summoned the battle ends soon after and visually I found nothing exciting about the combat. Now if I liked the spirits or found something about them to really get attached to I’d feel differently. The only fight I really enjoyed was the last one at the end of the season, the big climatic fight of season one. I understand the last fight needs to be the most entertaining and drawn out but it shouldn’t be the only one I enjoyed.
Overall I know I said a lot of negatives but nothing about this show is actually done badly. It has an interesting idea that is rarely touched on and an interesting main character that doesn’t always stay that way. The real problem is there was nothing about this show that really hooked me to it. It’s a very slow paced story that ends up really going nowhere by the end of the season and the path to nowhere didn’t entertain me in the process. For that reason my journey into this show starts and ends with season one.
