Content Warning: Now given the content within this show before I do anything I need to give a content warning. This show mentions ending oneself very frequently and where that is a subject so sensitive I’m afraid to say the word I felt like this was important information for you the readers.
With the warning out of the way onto the review itself. No Longer Allowed In Another World is a show about a man known as Sensei who attempts to end himself with his lover; however, before they can do the deed themselves they are both hit by a truck and Sensei finds himself in another world. Yes you read that right. Sensei a gloomy author who first tries to end himself a second time but to no avail. He then realizes his lover could be in this new world as well and seeks to find her and in the process ends up crossing paths with several otherworlders like himself but who use their overpowered gifts to abuse the world around them.
The story in this show takes what we know of the isekai genre and for the most part tells the same story. Someone from another world comes in and is supposed to save everyone. Where this show takes things in a different direction lies with the attitude of the main character and the foe at hand. Sensei is very morbid and often flings himself into harms way not to solve the problem but to end himself. However, for a variety of reasons these attempts end up failing. Because he has such a unique demeanor it makes predicting how he responds to a situation difficult so the story becomes one full of surprises. The other oddity to this show is how the antagonists are Otherworlders. This is something I have rarely seen in all of the isekais I’ve seen so it’s a nice change of pace. I also really love the romance aspect of it where Sensei is motivated to reunite with his lover. Now I’ll admit this part didn’t come up as much as I expected but as a bit of a hopeless romantic myself I enjoy a romance motivated character. I’ll also admit as a pacifist I had a hard time with the additional part of that goal to end themselves.
The characters are really good in this show. Sensei is a very interesting character not just because he’s unique. He’s an author which is an unusual occupation for an isekai hero and his skills are put to good use once it’s revealed that his own over powered skill revolves around writing. I can’t really explain it in detail as it’s a pretty significant spoiler but I will say it’s a power I’ve never seen in an isekai before and it immediately caught my attention. However, what I like most about Sensei is how he’s very in tune with the people around him. When he is invested in someone he eagerly learns all he can about them to write their story and often picks up on subtle details through his observations that everyone else in the show misses.
Then you have the rest of the cast and it’s filled with characters with complex stories behind them. You have various otherworlders who were mistreated in the world they came from and because those issues were unresolved they took out their frustrations using their amazing skills in this new world. Some of the villains were just terrible people while others were just those who had unresolved trauma. It made the characters compelling to watch and I shared Sensei’s investment in their stories. Characters unique to that world also have their own various backgrounds and are equally fleshed out. It was a show full of well developed and captivating characters.
Now the combat in this show is where things are a bit lacking. I personally didn’t have a problem with this as it’s clearly a more story oriented show, but I also know isekais are known for their fighting. Sensei doesn’t fight at all. Not even a little bit. The fighting is done by everyone around him and the combat is more of a means to push the plot than anything else. The fighting is quick and kind of forgettable. I didn’t mind that at all but if this is a deal breaker for you then I can see this show being a pass.
So overall this is a very story heavy show with a unique take on a reluctant hero versus a unique villain. Because it’s heavily character focused all of the characters are interesting with deep and detailed backstories. Sensei is very great at piecing together these stories and it makes watching the details of each character unravel a fascinating process. It’s an unusually combat light isekai and while the story is incredible enough to make the show entertaining without it I can also see how some people might not enjoy the show because of that. Without a doubt I want to see where this show goes in season 2.
