So apparently I am on a romance anime kick as I find myself watching Love After World Domination. Our story stars Fudo a leader of a Power Rangers inspired group of heroes called the Gelato 5. However, Futo is in love with one of their greatest enemies Desumi who is the Reaper Princess. After professing his love for her the two enter a relationship that they must keep secret. Enemies to the public eye but a couple in secret this is a story of forbidden love.
I just love the story behind this so much. As a Power Rangers fan having Power Rangers inspired anime to any degree is exciting. We even get an overly cheesy and dramatic morph sequence and I really couldn’t be happier about that. Though, that’s the Power Rangers nerd in me speaking. The romance angle is also just incredibly done. The build up with the romance between Desumi and Futo feels really well done and paced perfectly. The two fight the typical struggles of a new relationship while also fighting each other to save their secret is a fun dynamic. This story balances the heartfelt romance story, the humorous secret angle while also adding the Power Rangers like adventures of our heroes. I was very impressed with how each of these elements which can work well on it’s own were blended well with each other to create a cohesive and well put together story.
One of the best examples I have of how this story is executed is how in one episode Desumi plans an evil attack on an amusement park. However, this is just a ploy for her and Futo to have to be in the same spot so they can go on a date so they go out as their allies fight in the background. The way the romance, combat and the secret angles all were seen in full force in these scene and throughout the entire season is impressive.
Now I did initially have mixed thoughts on the final episode because it starts off by abruptly creating tension between our lovely couple. It felt so sudden that it was jarring but when we got to the resolution I loved it so much that I stopped caring about how it started as it was an over the top lovely way to wrap up the season.
The characters are also very interesting. Now other than Desumi we really only get a little bit of information about the backgrounds of the rest of the cast. Normally this is something I don’t care for but where there’s so much going on with the story it’s something I didn’t miss. Plus the characters are just all fun to watch. When Desumi and Futo are together it’s wholesome and their chemistry is infectious. The supporting cast comes and goes throughout the story but most of them play vital roles in advancing the plot and were entertaining to watch. While the supporting cast was fun they never overshadowed what was happening with our couple so I thought their inclusion in the story was well done.
Overall I can’t think of another romance inspired anime that was as ambitious as this one. The balance of the romance, secret and the saving the world story really in theory should be too much for a show. Even so Love After World Domination manages to beautifully mend all of these elements together much like combining the weapons of a colorful group of heroes to make one super weapon. This is a show with a lot to offer for a wide variety of fans and it is easily one of my favorite romance animes to date.
