So this occurred in Collect a Con 2022 in Raleigh, NC. There’s actually two parts to this story because for some reason this was a day that I got hit in the head a couple of times. While that’s not many it’s odd it happened at a convention twice so I thought it made for an interesting story.

So we were only at this convention Saturday which was supposed to have a concert where we could see Jason Paige, the singer of the original Pokémon theme, perform live. So naturally as a long time Pokémon fan I’m extremely excited. However, sadly his flight was delayed so he was not going to be able to make it in time. This was a pretty massive bummer because even though he would make his Sunday performance, I was leaving that evening to do another convention. I was about to walk away when the person on stage decided as a consolation for missing out he would throw various packs of Pokémon cards at us. At the time I wasn’t really collecting cards so I really wasn’t paying as much attention as I should have been. I was off in my own world when all of a sudden a pack of cards hits me right above my right eye. I figured it hit me so it’s mine and decided to keep it to find a couple of legendary Pokémon in the pack, Deoxys and Virizion.

Later that day, on the same stage, Vanilla Ice was scheduled to perform. Now I’m not really a fan but my wife was so I made sure to get us a couple of VIP passes so we could be up close to the stage and make sure she would have a fun time. As Vanilla Ice is performing he had people dressed up as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles come on stage and it’s honestly a really fun show I was having a blast. Ice then decides to spray the crowd with water from water bottles and once he empties one he throws it out from the crowd. Being the genius that I am I didn’t learn anything from earlier in the day and once again did not pay enough attention. I literally saw the water bottle coming in my direction but it was too late to do anything about it when I realized it was traveling right towards me. The bottle hits me right in the forehead and falls to my feet where I see a lot of clearly very devoted Vanilla Ice fans eyeing it. I was not about to get in their way so I kicked the water bottle towards them and that was the end of that.

So yeah the only time I ever tried to go to two concerts at the same convention in the same day and I ended up whacked in the head both times. I certainly found it amusing and I had a great time at both events, but I also learned a valuable lesson. When things are being thrown at a convention never assume you are safe and now I always keep an eye out when things are flying.
