Convention Stories: Two Andriod 18s

This is a story that took place at Lexington Toy and Comic Con 2022 and involves both my best friend Samuel and my sibling, Lee. Now because the convention featured the actor that played Mr. Feenie from Boy Meets World my friend Samuel really wanted to go to this event. My wife and I were more than happy to take him along with us and it was during the planning stages that he explained he was going to do a cosplay of Andriod 18 from Dragonball Z.

Now I know my friend cosplays a lot so honestly, that was a pretty common conversation for us. However, a few days after we planned things out I was scrolling through Facebook and Lee was doing a costest of their version of Android 18. Now for context, while I and Samuel live a little shy of two hours from this event, Lee lives about 20 minutes away. When I saw that the gears in my head were turning and I was messaging them explaining my humorous idea. The plan was for Lee to attend the convention and completely surprise my friend with the same cosplay. At this point, to the best of my knowledge, Samuel has never attended an event where someone was wearing the exact same cosplay and is very passionate about his craft so I thought it would be a nice surprise for him. Lee was immediately on board with this idea and hid the post from Samuel so he wouldn’t see it.

Then we arrive on the day of the event and Samuel is fully dressed up in his cosplay. Lee plans to be there later that day so we goof around at the event getting our autographs and stuff out of the way. As we do this I’m dropping hints that he may see someone in the same cosplay as him, knowing full well how to make these hints and not arouse his suspicion that I’m up to something. Now at this point, I’m dragging out everything we do to buy time for Lee to get there, Lexington traffic can be a pain on a normal weekend, but then Lee arrives and I’m still playing it cool and go “Hey Samuel is that an Android 18 cosplay?” Then I just let everything else play out. He leaps at the chance to say hi and the look he had when he realized it was Lee was priceless. He was simultaneously processing the shock of knowing the cosplayer and then realizing this was another one of my ploys, I do a lot of them.

Samuel’s on the left and Lee is on the right

After the shock wore off it wound up being a fun time just all of us hanging out and it was a great way to end our experience at an event that is so near and dear to me.
