I Was Reincarnated As The 7th Prince So I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability Season One Review: This Title Is Way Too Long

So on a whim I decided to give I Was Reincarnated As The 7th Prince So I Can Take My Time Perfecting My Magical Ability. The show starts off with an unnamed individual dying at the hands of fire magic and showing that even as the individual was dying he had a fascination with magic. This individual was reborn as Lloyd the 7th Prince of Saloum which gave him a strong bloodline and time a perfect combo for him to explore his desire to learn all about magic. In the process he encounters demons, chi experts, assassins and more and this is the story of his adventures of his obsession with magic.

I think first I’ll talk about the story because for the most part we don’t really have one here. Everything is all about Lloyd’s desire to perfect his knowledge of magic to the point that he has a singular obsession with it. We do get some tidbits of lore of the world around Saloum but really everything we get is what we happened to learn as Lloyd ventures out on his adventures. This isn’t a bad thing as there are a lot of great shows that focus more on the character rather and really don’t do much to explore the world around them and this happens to be the approach we have here.

The characters are the next big thing to talk about. While all of the characters to some degree work well together pretty much everyone is one note. Lloyd’s only personality is his love of magic and the entire season we watch him study, experiment and fight using it which make up some of the most entertaining moments of the season.

Then you have supporting characters like Sylpha who’s only personality is her strength and how she uses it to protect Lloyd and you have several characters that are equally defined by a singular characteristic. These characters are entertaining with their various roles within the season, but while they are entertaining for me the thing to keep in mind watching this is if you don’t love the characters as a first impression you’re not going to love them at all as they don’t change or show any additional traits. Honestly while I found the characters entertaining I didn’t like them enough to really get attached to anything they were doing. You do get to see the backstory of some of the characters but I felt nothing really hit on an emotional level. Another thing about the characters is you get a fair big of fan service here and all of it is around Lloyd who is clearly a grade school aged individual so it’s easy to feel a bit uncomfortable watching it.

The final thing I want to talk about are the fight scenes as I feel these are the make or break aspect of the show. I really enjoyed watching the fights as Lloyd is incredibly overpowered as he has studied magic to the point that he can one shot most of his enemies so the fights are often just displays of his amazing power. He even takes hits just to study the magic that was used against him. What you get often includes over the top explosions, incredibly displays of sheer might and a lot of spellcasting creating a myriad of colors to show the various spells being used.

So overall what you have here is a show that forgoes a complicated story to focus on Lloyd’s singular objective to study and perfect his magical abilities in a world full of equally one note characters. All of these characters have roles to play within the story and do so well enough but none of them are fleshed out well enough to be all that memorable. However, in his quest for magic Lloyd engages in a series of battles and experiments that are very entertaining to watch and ultimately make up the entire entertainment value for the show. So the best way to sum up this show is that it is a gamble and bets everything on it’s ability to entertain you with it’s display of the magic Lloyd is obsessed with because outside of that the show does everything well enough to entertain but not well enough to amaze.
