Chillin’ In Another World With Level 2 Super Cheat Powers: A Charming Story With Peace, Love And Good Cheer

So after watching a show where the cheat powers come at level one I figured the natural course was to move on to ones where they happen at level two. Our story stars a merchant named Banaza who lives in a world where demi humans are treated poorly; however, he finds himself summoned to a place called Klyrode to be the hero. The problem is he seems to have ordinary stats so he’s banished to a dangerous area while another candidate who starts off with extraordinary stats is chosen as the hero. Banaza has an encounter with monsters that levels him up to level two where he immediately gets the biggest buff in history raising his skills to infinite with about every spell possible. Using his skills he changes his appearance and assumes the identify of the adventurer Flio and vows to not pick a side in the war with humans and demons; however, his peaceful nature causes him to end up being a key figure in diffusing conflict and he finds several new allies to live with him along the way.

First I’ll start about the story as it goes through your typical humans versus demons storyline. The humans are fighting to protect humanity from demons that are fighting to wipe them out. The thing is that this story really answers the big question of why that is the case. We find out what actually caused the war in the first place and in the process find out that the key figures in this show all have complex characteristics and motivations. One example is the demon lord himself Gholl. When he’s introduced it’s easy to think he will play your typical antagonist being the demon lord but he actually has no real desire to fight humanity just protect his fellow demons. When we peel back his layers we find he’s actually a wise and gentle character with power to spare and no desire to use it mindlessly.

Flio is also a rather complex character as he takes his animosity for the unfair treatment of demi humans in his old world and uses that as motivation to resolve the war peacefully using his overwhelming power defensively rather than offensively. The rest of the characters are also very fun to watch as Flio develops a love interest and this romance builds on itself very well with each episode. In fact I’d even call it charming. There was one episode where we had a legitimate death scare for his love interest and the fury Flio had for it felt justified because of how well this romance was developed and my gosh did the voice actor, Mauricio Ortiz-Segura, do a great job in the acting. The fury of a character with infinite stats is no joke.

Other characters join including a group of three women who at first I thought would be nothing memorable because usually when shows like this introduce a few characters at once they tend to function more as three characters that do everything together and function as one character but no every character we see has their own role, motivation and story to play. It was actually really impressive to see so much storytelling in one season.

As part of the story it’s an interesting parallel to watch the growth of Flio versus the downfall of the one chosen as the hero. Flio grows overtime as a person bonding with the world and strengthening his resolve to stay neutral to the war and just look for a path to peace while the Hero consistently finds himself failing as his growth stops as soon as it starts and he realizes his initially amazing stats are not so incredible over time.

The voice acting here is so great. The voice of Flio does a brilliant job in conveying his gentle nature with a tone to match. As does the voice of Gholl who has a deep booming voice but because he is also gentle by nature the way he speaks and conducts himself reflects that. I was only familiar with a couple of the actors going into this show but they all did an outstanding job bringing these complex characters to life.

Now there is one aspect of this show I think might be a deterrent for those used to isekais. The fights are not the most interesting as they are not really the highlight of the show. Sure fights happen but they are very quick and because Flio has a peaceful mindset he’s not really trying to win just trying to stop the fight as best as he can. So really the fights serve more as opportunities for character development which the show does so well. If you’re a viewer that loves the action in a show and that motivates you to watch it I can see this being a show to avoid, but for me I loved the character development as that is one of the key things I enjoy.

Overall this show features a story that is charming and detailed from start to finish. All of the characters have complex motivations, personalities and stories behind them. Where most shows like this are bad to feature the main character and ignore the supporting cast, this one did a great job making every character feel like their own individual that had a valuable role to play. This is a great feel good show and the last episode talks about a season two which is great news for me as this is a show I want to have more of.
