So recently Pokemon released an epilogue to the DLC of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet meant to wrap up the story started in The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk. The story starts off with a call from Arven from the main game who asks to hang out and Penny and Nemona invite themselves to the party in the process. As your original party is reunited you get a letter from Kieran who invite you and your friends over to visit. You accept and as you return to Kitakami you find a strange phenomena is going on that essentially turns the residents into zombies.
So first I’ll talk about the story and it’s pretty straightforward but very interesting. The idea of Pokemon characters as zombies is kind of hilarious and done in a very comical way of Mochi chants and ridiculous dancing. Keep in mind these are Nintendo zombies not like the ones you’ll find on The Walking Dead. The concept was something I found very entertaining. It is short but it’s also an epilogue so there’s not much of a reason for it to be long.
One of the things I really liked most about this would have to be the character interactions. Seeing your original party of friends return was refreshing and by this point I forgot how well they really bounced off one another so it was a nice reminder of how much I really liked all of them. Then you also have Kieran added to the mix and he fits in perfectly with the group dynamic and the interactions were fun to watch. Now Carmine doesn’t really get to interact much for story related reasons and while I get it I also felt like I missed out on something for it because she’s a character I also really enjoy.
As for the new Pokemon I really didn’t care much about it at all. For story related purposes it did a great job and it’s cool that we get a brand new type combination for this one. With that being said it felt more like a catalyst for the story than anything that I would care about once that story was over. That’s not a bad thing but since there wasn’t much of a story presented about it during the epilogue there ultimately wasn’t much about it to hold my interest.
One thing I do dislike about the epilogue is how you have to download a mystery gift to be able to start it at all. I don’t know how long this item will be available and if it’s a permanent thing then it resolves my dislike; however, mystery gifts have a history of being only available for a period of time and if this is also the case it also means access to this epilogue is limited. The idea of having limited content for content that you pay for as DLC just doesn’t sit right with me as it feels like a means to rush people to buy it. Business wise it’s a smart move but having part of additional paid content locked behind a limited time thing is not something I’m going to give my seal of approval on.
Overall the epilogue is a very fun way to reintroduce characters from the base game of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and it was a lot of fun to revisit them. Having them meet the characters from the DLC was also a very nice treat and this is where the entertainment value of the story is at it’s best. The story itself is nice, comical and overall short but sweet and was a nice sendoff to all of these characters. I didn’t felt any really interest in the new Pokemon as I felt like it was just there for story purposes but I didn’t have a problem with that. The problem I do have is the fact that it appears this part of the DLC is available for a limited time and that just doesn’t work for me. Now I will resend this issue if it turns out that’s not the case but I haven’t seen anything that suggests that at this time.
