So honestly I was already in the process of watching season two of this show when I did my review of season one. The show continues with the adventures of Touya and his many future wives. Going into this season I was wondering if the show was going to do anymore to flesh out what Touya could do with his smartphone, the situations he gets himself into and will the fiancés show more of the aspects that made them interesting characters post engagement. I got part of what I wanted.
The story continues but this time more of a focus is on the threat of a behind the scenes enemy that threatens the entire world which requires Touya to assemble more of the pieces of Babylon to contend with. Finding out a bit more about the lore behind these enemies and discovering there is a lot of story to tell regarding them really made season two stand out to me as a unique part of the overall story the show is telling. I feel like we get enough that we kind of have an understanding as to the severity of the threat but at the same time we are left with so many questions it makes for a nice hook to continue watching the next seasons.
As for the rest of the story we get to see things escalate even further than we did in season one. Where Touya quickly became a homeowner and a fiancé to many women in the first season he just as quickly became king of his own country with even more fiancés in this one. Watching how the stakes are escalated now that Touya is dealing with matters that can affect multiple countries including his own was a nice elevation to the pace that was already established previously and made for a nice series of new scenarios to see Touya cleverly work his way around.
I also really enjoyed how this season did more of a focus on Babylon and we get to see more of what it can do and the benefits it adds to everything Touya needs to do. Babylon is getting more and more interesting and it’s fun to find out what each section does. I also liked how they toned down the adult oriented jokes in these sections to a degree as they were a little over the top and forced in my opinion in season one but here the humor is a little more enjoyable. Now again I don’t have any objections to adult jokes but I feel like there’s a time and a place where they are entertaining and these moments in Babylon just don’t fall in that category.
The smartphone angle once again comes into play and we do get to see more unique applications of combining smartphone apps with magic. It’s still just as fun to watch these antics as they were in season one. I think part of it is that I’m a bit of a sci-fi nerd as well so the smartphone idea speaks to that fandom of mine to a degree.
Now for the one weakness of this season and it’s once again the fiancés of Touya. Like season one we are introduced to new fiancés all with their own unique situations, characters and story’s that make them interesting and captivating characters. However, as soon as Touya puts a ring on their finger it’s like they lose almost all individuality as the fiancés all operate like they are some sort of hive mind with similar opinions, reactions roles etc. These are really cool characters that I feel like the writer just doesn’t know what to do with once they get engaged and that saddens me a bit as this has now happened to such a degree that I can’t even keep up with their names.
Overall season two really did a great job continuing with the pace set by season one and elevated the lore of the world, establishing new situations greater than what we saw in season one and giving the viewers more cool smartphone moments. The only downside is the fact that when Touya gets engaged the person he gets engaged to looses their individuality and it saddens me that it happens to characters who were so fleshed out, unique and captivating beforehand.
