Protodroid DeLTA is a game that recently became available on the Nintendo Switch and on Steam after a very successful Kickstarter campaign, one which I immediately backed after seeing it. The game stars DeLTA an AI protodroid that was developed by Dr. Shelton to create change in Radia and alter people’s perspective on AI; however, after after Dr. Shelton’s lab was attacked DeLTA strives to arm herself and protect the world from the drone gangs that have dominated Radia.
The gameplay is pretty intense on this game. So intense I actually can’t play it if I’m mentally exhausted from work which is a testament to the amount of focus it requires. It plays much like the classic Megaman games except in 3D which sounds like a simple change but one that proves to make a monumental difference. Picture a Megaman game with threats coming at you at any point and that is how you feel in this game. In this 3D platformer you constantly have to move and react to things in order to be able to get to the end of the levels by timing things perfectly while dealing with enemies specifically designed to hinder that timing in every possible way as you make your way to the boss. While the game is challenging I also love how generous it is as healing items are in abundance and the game features a lot of checkpoints for you to spawn back at when you drop to 0 health, which happened to me a lot. So it’s very tough but also in a fair way and it’s a balance I really like.
The characters are all amazing. Each one is very different and I love the creativity behind them all. I actually wish we got more dialogue as it was fun listening to the banter between DeLTA and her friends and foes.
Normally I don’t talk about this but I really like the music in this. It’s really catchy and I’m so glad that I got the digital music add on during the kickstarter campaign. It’s got kind of a fusion of rock music combined with the style of the classic Megaman games and it works really well.
What really surprised me is that the levels themselves are actually pretty long. I was originally thinking the game was going to be a bit on the short side with only four main bosses before the endgame stuff but it actually takes awhile to get through them. Not just because it’s a tough game but it really throws a lot at you.
Originally my only complaint about the game was the fixed button layout which was not something I enjoyed at all as I found the button layout really hard to adjust to but that was later added on as an update and so my one and only issue was quickly resolved.
Overall if you enjoy the classic Megaman games this game will absolutely entertain you but it’s also different enough that DeLTA, the world around her, and the game’s levels are unique and only inspired by the Megaman franchise not a clone of it. I have to give props to the solo developer Adam Kareem as this project looks like it was a massive undertaking and for the final product to some out so well shows an incredible attention to detail on his part. Massive respect for him for sure.
