Corbin Con Review: Finally an Event Close to Home

So this is going to be a bit shorter than my normal convention reviews because this event didn’t have guests or panels it was mainly a collection of vendors but because this event was literally 30 minutes from home I decided to attend and see what a local event had to offer.

So naturally talking about the vendors I have some positives and negatives about the selection. It was nice to see some Pokemon merch with a lot of cards and a small variety of items; however, for the most part, it felt like a handful of professional vendors with a few individuals trying to sell their own collections making up the majority of the room. That’s fine as it was something I expected given our area but since this event is clearly going to be a continuing thing as they will have another one this fall I think something needs to be done to get more vendors to not only get a variety of merch but also give it more of a convention feel to it. Plus there was only one anime merch in the entire room so it would be nice to see that branch out a bit.

With that being said there was something about the vendors that really took me by surprise which was a ren faire booth. I’ve always wanted to go to one but where I already do a lot of traveling for conventions I’ve never gone because the closest ren faire also requires a good bit of traveling. At least that was the case as I found out at Corbin con there are two groups planning their first events this year in areas less than an hour from home. Naturally, I was pretty excited to see that and I’m already making plans to go.

Another surprise was that the event had a cosplay contest which I wasn’t expecting. I didn’t think cosplay was something very popular around here and while it wasn’t a huge list I did notice there were a few entries so I thought it was a cool thing to learn.

Overall Corbin Con is an event that makes for a great way to spend the day for the locals. Because it’s a small event with a limited amount of things to do I don’t recommend any kind of traveling for this event but as someone who had to drive usually 70 to 80 miles just to get to the closest event it’s nice to be able to just drive a few minutes to get any kind of convention experience. Plus I got to learn that our area is really starting to offer more of these experiences and it’s something I’m really looking forward to.
